The Guardian Unlimited – Friday 22nd September, 2000
The following short passage comes from an article about the appeal of ugly men in film and the media. The article was written by Louisa Young.
“Now, in Hollywood, it seems to me the men are being prettified to the same degree that women have been. Even Richard E Grant has started to look like an airbrushed sitcom person not, as he rightfully should, the devil incarnate.”

World Entertainment News Network – 2000
Richard E. Grant distressed the parents of several child actors on the set of his latest movie The Little Vampire by encouraging the tiny stars to set fire to their wind.
The actor stars in the tale of a family of Scottish vampires saved from death by their human friends – with co-stars Tommy Hinkley and Jerry Maguire star Jonathan Lipnicki.
Grant kept on set spirits high by trying to set fire to his flatulence in a bid to amuse the cast of children – but the actor’s on-set fun led to panic as the four child actors tried to mimic Grant’s antics.
Hinkley says, “The kids just loved watching Richard set fire to his farts. It became a bit of a problem when they started copying him. There were some concerned parents out there.”

Withnail Goes Wah-Wah
18/09/2000 Withnail star Richard E Grant looked happy when Empire Online bumped into him at a London theatre premiere last week and the reason soon became clear – just back from Swaziland, the actor is mid-way through production on his first film, called Wah-Wah.
Actor Richard E Grant has returned to his African roots to make his debut as a movie screenplay writer.
The 43-year-old diplomat’s son will be turning back the clock to focus on life in his native Swaziland in the Sixties in the comedy drama Wah-Wah which is due to go into production next year.
Grant says: “It is an irreverent look at colonial life though I must stress that it is not based on my own life in any way. I have been writing this and that for quite some time and was really pleased with the response to my Withnail Diaries which were published a couple of years ago. I think writing for the screen was the next step. As they say, write something you know something about.”
Richard also added “It’s a comedy drama set in the sixties and it’s a look at colonial life in Africa. Of course I know all about it, having been brought up there.” According to Richard, there’s a big-name star in place but he won’t reveal who, “Can’t tell you, won’t tell you but filming is starting in Spring, the money is already in place…just note it’s not about me.”
But he stresses that he won’t be playing the lead role in the story. Rumour has it…thanks Annie, that it’s Michael Caine who’s the big name star. REG won’t confirm or deny :) He is busy re-writing it though.

Red Squirrel Appeal – BBC Online
Friday 15th September, 2000
Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Michael Caine and Sir Elton John are among a number of stars to take part in a drawing campaign in aid of the endangered red squirrel.
Over 200 stars contributed to the "scribble a squirrel" initiative to support wildlife campaigners who say the animal could become extinct in England 10 years.
The sketches will be auctioned on the internet from Saturday to raise money for the North East Wildlife Trust and the Calvert Trust as part of Red Squirrel Week. The drawings display a range of artistic talent.
Some, such as Sir Michael’s, are rough and ready line drawings. Others, such as Sir Paul’s picture, demonstrate a familiarity with the tools of the art.
"This is the best I can do, good job I’m an actor," Sir Michael scrawled on his work.
Other stars to have taken part include Phil Collins, Barry Manilow, Sir Norman Wisdom, Richard E Grant, the Duchess of York and Rolf Harris.
The auction will run for two weeks on internet auction website QXL.
