The Cold Light Of Poland

May25

It’s not always easy translating REG articles that were originally written in another language, but when Jolie asked around as to whether or not one of us could read and understand Polish I answered “I don’t, but I know someone who does!”

That was about six months ago (give or take a month) and now I’m ready to reveal that I have the said article up on the site. As with many of the stuff I’ve added to the site recently I received this before our “web troubles” but needed to work on it a bit before adding it.

The article was written about REG’s film “The Cold Light Of Day” and is from Poland’s Premiere Magazine – dated some time in 1996. Unfortunately there’s no pics to accompany it, but you can at least read the “English version” here.

Special thanks goes to my good friend Ewa Liberacka for translating this piece, as well as Jolie for supplying it. Thanks for all the help, guys!

Local-Boy-Made-Good To Star In African Farm

May25

The South African Sun Times – Sunday 25th May, 2003

By Gillian Anstey

Actor Richard E Grant is set to star in a film of Olive Schreiner’s famous novel The Story of an African Farm.

Grant – who has found fame in Britain and Hollywood after growing up in Swaziland and studying at the University of Cape Town’s Drama School – is “committed to the project”, his agent, Harriet Robinson, confirmed from London on Friday .

The Story of an African Farm is about three childhood friends growing up on a Karoo farm in the mid-19th century. A TV series based on the novel was screened more than 20 years ago.

The film’s director, David Lister, whose credits include Leon Schuster’s Panic Mechanic and the TV drama Barney Barnato, said Grant was ideal for the role of the book’s charming but devious villain, Bonaparte Blenkins.

“Look at him in Robert Altman’s Gosford Park. He can do it in a look,” said Lister.

Scriptwriter and producer Bonnie Rodini, who studied the novel for matric, said the story was a South African classic which deserved to be brought to the big screen.

Filming begins in mid-September on a farm midway between the Karoo towns of Matjiesfontein and Laingsburg.

Rodini said casting was still in the initial stages.

The BBC Chelsea Flower Show

May 2003

Richard appeared on the BBC2 Chelsea Flower Show programme. When asked if he was enjoying the Show, REG replied that he felt “like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory”! Flowers anyone?

Article Snippet & Flower Pics

May24

There’s an extremely small snippet of an article, sent to me by Denise, taken from Sky Magazine early this year. It’s about Richard’s upcoming appearance as the host of the Sony Ericsson Awards and you can see that here.

I’ve added a few pictures to accompany the sighting of Richard and Joan at the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this week. You can see them here courtesy of SueW and the Rex Features website.

Cannes 1999, Food 2001 & BAFTA 2002

May23

I’ve added a small piece on the 1999 Cannes Film Festival to the site (seeing as the latest one is now in progress). It mentions Richard’s “upcoming role” in The Little Vampire and you can read it here.

Most of you are probably familiar with Richard’s musings on food and wine in Posh Nosh, and again in one of the “Temple Exclusive Reports” that we had last year, but some of you may not be aware that those weren’t the first times that REG has mused publically about food.

Back in May 2001 Richards food related annecdotes formed the basis of an article written by chef Jeremy Lee on the Guardian Unlimited website. Delicasies such as crab pasta, barbecued prawns and lychee sorbet are fondly remembered by Richard, with the recipes for each supplied by Mr Lee. To get your taste buds working overtime, click here.

While cleaning up some folders on my computer I also came across a small “screen capture” pic of the BAFTA 2002 commercial that was sent to me by SueW last year. It’s not the best quality as Sue forgot to turn off the flash on the camera because she was in a hurry. Anyway, you can see that here.
