What could be more pleasant than Scotland in the Spring? Well if you are a student at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, you might say a visit by Richard E. Grant! Richard came in to speak to the drama pupils about his life as an actor. He was accompanied by his wife Joan Washington, a noted voice dialect coach and his daughter Olivia, a recent graduate of LAMDA. They kept it all in the family, sharing their stories and experiences with the students.

Richard E Grant Visit
For many of the drama students at Robert Gordon’s College, becoming a performer is a strong desire. Less certain, however, is the means by which many will achieve their dream – competitive drama schools, pressure from others, and worries about “back up plans” are just a few things that concern aspiring actors and singers. When acclaimed actor Richard E Grant, his wife the talented voice coach Joan Grant (stage name Washington) and their daughter Olivia (a graduate of a course at the prestigious LAMDA) arrive at RGC, therefore, their message was a surprising one – go for it!
Each of their stories was exciting, each an example of just how uncertain and challenging the performing world can be to be a part of. Richard E Grant told of how he moved from his home in Africa to England to pursue his dream of acting (which has, of course, led to a notable career, with his starring roles in films such as Withnail & I and Dracula). Joan Grant told us of her dream of becoming an actress (“I thought I was fabulous”, she said of when she arrived at RADA) but that her success has ultimately come with her voice coaching – she has worked with many stars including Helen Mirren and Colin Firth. Olivia Grant was keen to offer information about drama school – having done a one year course at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art), she was able to advise several hopefuls about auditioning and what to expect from a drama course.
The S4-S5 pupils who attended were truly appreciative of the advice offered by Mr, Mrs and Miss Grant, with many asking questions regarding how to succeed in the acting world. Many had queries as to how to improve their own acting styles, and all were helped by the guidance and tips offered. Thanks to the Grants for offering invaluable advice, providing some very funny stories from their time in the world of performing, and for wishing us good luck in pursuing our aspirations.
